Our hall resounded with song on Wednesday 17 January as Ian Roberts (Director of Music at Newcastle Cathedral) worked with Year 3 and Year 4 before leading a session with ALL of the school staff. This included songs, musical games and various singing tips. Mr Roberts is going to do some more regular work with Year 3 during this term as part of the curriculum. As well as providing an exciting musical opportunity in school, Mr Roberts is hunting for musically talented boys and girls that might like to become a Cathedral Chorister at Newcastle Cathedral.
The Cathedral Choristers receive an unparalleled musical education which is completely free of charge. Each receive a small bursary which parents can give as ‘pocket money’, or perhaps put towards instrumental lessons. They also receive free individual singing lessons from the Cathedral’s Vocal Coach. The Girl Choristers sing on Mondays and Wednesdays after school, and the Boy Choristers on Tuesdays and Thursday. If a number of Kells Lane pupils were interested, lift sharing is a possibility, or it might be possible for the Choristers to travel by taxi.
The benefits of serious singing extend beyond just the musical. Regular singing can help with literacy, numeracy, powers of concentration, physical fitness and many other things. Particularly, singing as a Cathedral Chorister can be a life changing experience.
