Friday Bulletin – 12th May 2017

12 May 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

We would love you and your family to join our school team at the 35th Children’s Cancer Run held at Newcastle Racecourse, Gosforth Park.

Since 1979 the North of England Children’s Cancer Research fund (NECCR) has helped fund research that has established the North of England as one of the world leaders in the treatment of childhood cancer.

The NECCR was formed in 1979 by a small group of parents whose lives had been changed forever by childhood cancer. At that time eight out of ten children diagnosed with cancer would not survive. Since then research has come a long way with over 75% of children now surviving childhood cancer.

The aim of the NECCR is to raise money for continuing vital research into the causes and treatment of childhood cancer. Although outcomes for children and families have improved so much, cancer continues to be the number one cause of non-accidental death among children in the UK.

The main objectives of the research carried out in Newcastle are:

  1. To increase the number of children cured of cancer
  2. To make treatment less distressing
  3. To find causes of childhood cancer
  4. To improve chemotherapy 5 To individualise treatment
  5. To develop new treatments

The Children’s Cancer Run is a family fun run with one, three and five mile courses. The event is supported by Greggs and raises funds for the North of England Children’s Cancer Research fund. We are very excited to be supporting this event again and would like to invite you to join us for what promises to be a fun filled family day out. All participants receive a 35th Anniversary medal and Gregg’s picnic on the day, and all children receive a limited edition t-shirt. Metro Radio will also be there to entertain everyone with music and competitions.

Please complete an on-line entry form to join our team:

  1. Log on to www.childrenscancerrun.co.uk
  2. Select ‘Enter now’ and you will be asked to log in or sign up to Everyday Hero – this is an essential part of the registration system and only takes 2 minutes to sign up
  3. Complete your entry form, selecting our school name from the drop down list
  4. Click proceed to payment to complete the registration for you and your family

Please note that the three and five mile courses are suitable for children over 7. All children must be supervised by an adult (parents can accompany their children on the Mini Mile without registering but please register if you would like to receive a medal and picnic).

We would encourage you to do what you can in order to raise sponsorship as all of the funds raised will be used to fund the research team at Newcastle who are working to find better treatments and cures for childhood cancer. Every penny raised will make a difference, helping more children beat cancer. Please raise funds using either the paper sponsor forms provided or the on-line fundraising page created when you register on-line.

Your ‘On the Day guide’, run numbers, start time and children’s t-shirts will be sent home with your child the week before the run. If you have any questions in the meantime please get in touch with Mrs King via the school office.

Have a lovely weekend.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs A Whistler
