We started our OPAL journey at Kells Lane last year. OPAL is a playtime project which improves the quality of play opportunities for all children. During primary education, children spend around 1.4 years outside actively playing. OPAL focuses on providing a wide variety of play opportunities from the 16 play types, meaning children are still learning and having fun whilst outside. OPAL has a strong impact on children’s creativity, imagination, cooperation, resilience, stamina and overall confidence.

The OPAL staff team is made up of the following members of staff:

  • Mr Bradley – Curricular Lead for Play
  • Mrs Anderson-Harrison – Curricular Support for Play
  • Mrs Hutchinson – Play Coordinator
  • Miss Wilson – Play Champion (staff governor)

Our OPAL buddy team are made up of children from Y5. This year their role is slightly different and rather than acting as playtime ‘buddies’, they are working closely with Mr Bradley to manage the OPAL equipment and ensure it is being looked after. They meet regularly to discuss new ideas and finding ways to improve the OPAL provision. Below is a ‘wish list’ that they have created. If you are able to donate any items to help, please leave them next to the white polytunnel before or after school.
